In this week’s recap, Marcello talks about the possible energy crisis to come due to the increase in energy production costs; moreover, the effect of this and the increase in transportation costs makes the possible crisis look more and more real. Communications infrastructure failures (as happened with WhatsApp this week) may repeat themselves and even last longer.

Shares of Moderna, a U.S. pharmaceutical and biotech company, fell -8.94% on Wednesday to $302.42 as European Nordic countries suspend the use of Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine in young people and investors fear that a rival’s COVID-19 pill will ultimately hurt sales of the vaccine. The stock is down 33.67% in the past month, but is still up 189.48% in 2021 and 314.67% y/y, with a market cap of $134.05 billion.
Shares of Hong Kong-listed Chinese Estates, a major shareholder in beleaguered developer China Evergrande, jumped 31.72% on Thursday after announcing on Wednesday that it had received an offer for its privatization. The Hong Kong developer said the family of Chinese Estates’ largest shareholder Joseph Lau had proposed its privatization, offering minority shareholders a 38% premium over its last share price.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects global economic growth in 2021 to be slightly below its July forecast of +6%, IMF head Kristalina Georgieva said Tuesday, listing risks associated with debt (currently at levels of 100% of GDP), inflation and diverging economic trends in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Global GDP growth is expected to be +4.8% in 2022.
The volcanic eruption on the island of La Palma, in the Spanish-controlled Canary archipelago, began on September 19 and has forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 residents. It had already destroyed nearly 1,000 buildings. On Tuesday it greatly increased its explosive power, roaring louder and spewing thicker lava from its main vent. The areas of the island affected by the volcano are now 10%.
